Director, Media Relations/Broadcasting - Arizona Coyotes - AHL (Tucson, AZ)
Job Summary
This position is responsible for serving as the Director, Media Relations/Broadcasting for the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate in Tucson. This position will manage the day-to-day media relations efforts for the team and assure effective communications between the organization and the local and national media. The objective of the Director, Media Relations/Broadcasting is to work closely with the President to maximize media coverage for the organization and to enhance the Club’s reputation and image through the execution of the team’s communications strategies. This position will also serve as the Club’s Radio-Play-by-Play Announcer for all broadcasts and manage the team’s broadcasting department.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Manage the day-to-day interaction between the players and coaches and members of the media at team practices and games.
• Serve as Radio Play-by-Play Announcer for all broadcasts.
• Travel with the team on a regular basis and attend all practices and morning skates as well as all home and road games.
• Responsible for facilitating all media and broadcasting interviews at practices, pre-game availability, intermissions during games and post-game dressing room access.
• Oversee all interviews for the head coach at practices and games.
• Provide access to local and national rights holders as well as reporters in compliance with the AHL’s media access policies.
• Coordinate, evaluate and respond to media requests for players, coaches and general manager as well as assist in the preparation of media interviews.
• Serve as the liaison between players and coaches for various media, promotional, community relations, marketing and sponsorship appearances.
• Serve as an editor for various publications including media guide, game notes, game program, yearbook and post-season guide.
• Generate positive media coverage for the Club by developing and pitching story ideas (traditional and non-traditional) to increase awareness of players, coaches, community relations projects and business-related activities.
• Play an active role in contributing to the team’s social media strategy and in developing content ideas for the team’s website.
• Assist in the hiring, training and managing of the Media Relations and Broadcasting department’s game-night staff and interns.
• Serve as a liaison with the AHL’s off-ice officiating crew.
• Assist in the coordination of player and team awards, milestones and ceremonies.
• Contribute to pre and post-game radio shows as requested by show producer.
• Contribute to any team specials or shows produced by radio rights holders throughout the year.
• Support ancillary television, radio, website and game operations programming during regular season, playoffs and off-season.
• Write a regularly scheduled blog for team website.
• Conduct phone interviews as requested by team for radio network affiliates, local rights-holders, local media and visiting team requests.
• Participate in TV and radio interviews with local stations to promote team.
• Emcee press conferences and team events when requested.
• Appear at all requested charity appearances; including all major fundraisers, as well as various other community events as needed during the regular season, playoffs and off-season.
• Support corporate sales, ticket sales, community relations, fan development and grass root initiatives with personal and media appearances as needed during the regular season, playoffs and off-season.
• Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Job Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skill and Ability:
• Must have excellent understanding of the game of hockey, with the ability to communicate such knowledge to both radio listeners and fans at events and clinics.
• 5-7 years of experience in both broadcasting and media relations capacity.
• Excellent communication, writing and editing skills.
• Experience working with professional athletes, preferably while traveling with a team.
• Ability to work on deadline.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks.
• Must have command of English language, outgoing personality and positive attitude for radio duties.
• Strong interviewing skills.
• Flexible hours required: working nights, weekends, holidays and travel.
Education and Formal Training:
• Bachelor’s degree in Communications or Broadcasting.
Experience:
• Hockey, PR and broadcast background required.
• Minimum of three to five years professional hockey play-by-play experience.
Material and Equipment Used:
• Position requires the ability to use related broadcast equipment necessary for job as well as business equipment needed for completion of fan development initiatives such as computer software.
